THE STORY
Man's exploitation of the natural world includes some extraordinary examples of cruelty and callousness. In Thailand, the blood and galls are drained from a living snake to be used as a medicine. In South America, the eggs are taken from a living iguana, to be sold in the market alongside the mangoes and ice cream.
A TASTE FOR THE EXOTIC documents a number of such examples ok man's exploitation of animal for their products. As a result of this abuse, many species, such as the rhino, hunted for its horn, and the marine turtle, killed for its shell, are threatened with extinction. Tigers teeth are sold as pendants, and bird of paradise are killed in their thousands to be mounted and sold as tourist souvenirs. The illegal traffic in all these products is motivated entirely by man's increasing desire for the rare and exotic.
