THE STORY
Collectors of rare birds are prepared to spend a lot of money. Some parrots and cockatoos are sold for thousands of dollars. The rarer the bird, the higher the price. And if a bird is rare, that means it is endangered and any trade in the species is controlled or illegal.
TAKEN FROM THE WILD follows the smugglers and dealers who trade in one of the most valuable of these birds, the Black Palmed Cockatoos. Hunted and sold for a few dollars in the remote Aru Island of Indonesia , they are smuggled to dealers in Singapore, and eventually fetch a price of up to $10,000 when they reach Europe or north America.
Although There are controls on the international trade in all endangered species, where there is a market, there are dealers ready to supply the demand. But it is not just specialist collectors who are responsible for the traffic. In the developing world there is a flourishing local market and visiting tourists and businessmen are regular consumers.
